You love your pet but just can't keep him or her. You want them to go to a good home in fact you are desperate. You don't even want to make any money from a sale, you just want to re-home them to a home who will love them as much as you do.. So, you offer up your animal for "Free".
Chances are, this is the type of individual you might hear from.
1. The pet flipper: Takes on your animal with the intention of turning a quick buck. Has no intention of keeping or caring for it. Makes up great stories.
2. The dog baiter. If you have a small dog or a young dog or cat, they're perfect to keep his dogs vicious. Often uses your pet as bait in pit bull fighting.
3.The puppy farmer. Looks for un-spayed/neutered animals to breed, hoping to turn a quick buck.
4.The fake rescue. "Rescues" your pet in hopes of gaining online donations or any of the other abuses listed here.
5. The lab seller. Once you give your pet to this person, they are legally entitled to do anything they want with it, including sell it to a medical research lab.
5. The pet hoarder. Probably thinks they are "saving" your animal, who will quickly become forgotten in the crowd after the novelty of a new pet wears off.
6. The pet hater. Will use your pet for target practice or to abuse and torture. One notorious abuser posed as a rescue to gain access to cats who were then tortured.
7. The butcher. Feeds your animal to their pet snakes, lizards, or other exotic animals.
8. The fetishist. Looking for small pets to kill on camera. Puppies, kittens and small rabbits are perfect for this monster.
9. The cheapskate. A person looking for a free pet who has very little interest in spending money to maintain the pet's quality of life. That means no veterinary care.
10. The occultist. Satanism, devil worship call it whatever. They really do perform ceremonies with dead animals. The xmas holidays are high times for this particular sadist.
All of the above individuals search pet sites, looking for that one word: "FREE". And all will promise your pet the MOST loving home in order to get you to hand your pet over.
You have very little chance that your pet will go to a good home if you offer it over for free.
Just like rapists, child molesters and murderers often look like the most normal individual with a good job and a family, so do people who have evil intentions towards animals. Never think you can't be fooled. You are terribly vulnerable when you have to give up a pet and predators know this.
Here are some important steps you can take to protect your pets from predators:
1. Never say you are moving away. Make it known you will be around to follow up on your pet's well being.
2. Spay/neuter your pet
3. Always, always check the ID of a potential adopter and do a background check
4. Visit the home of the potential adopter and get verifiable references from them
5. Charge a "good faith" adoption fee of $50
6.Work with an established rescue organization.
7. Surrender your pet to a no kill shelter.
PLEASE do not give your precious, innocent animal away for "FREE"
