1991 VW Vanagon GL with custom Camper Conversion

7995 USD

Selling my 1991 VW van with low miles on a rebuilt Engine - under 30K on new engine. I've always service it myself and have a fat stack of receipts going back to the original owner - in last 2k - 42k miles it has a new starter, catalytic converter/exhaust, refitted to r134a AC, alternator, brakes and clutch.

I believe I'm the 3rd owner, I've owned it since 2003. A dozen years of fun and adventure. When I bought it I really wanted a Westfalia but to find one in good condition back then was out of my budget. So I found this really nice one with only 3K on the engine (at the time) and about 1/3 of the price of the Westys and I made a camper out of it. We made curtains that go around and match the interior nicely along with white cabinets, tile countertop, a sink and lots of storage. I also added swivel front seats, a table out of a vintage transporter camper, a 12 volt camper light and 12 volt power outlet behind the passenger seat that powered a DC cooler for road trips. My Coleman camp stove tucked nicely under the back seat and there was tons of room for camp chairs, a fold up table and all the other camping gear. It also has a nice Yakima rack on the top to carry a canoe, kayak or whatever else and a rare towing package. The only thing that was towed were utility trailers.

It runs and drives really nice. The rebuilt 2.1 liter engine was the biggest one made for the Vanagon and it pairs nicely with the 4 speed manual tranny. It needs nothing that I'm aware of and is ready for it's next adventure. The tires are in good shape and have lots of tread and even wear.

The exterior has areas that have been repainted. When I bought this van it had a reconstructed title from a recovered theft at 133k. I have the original receipts showing this. The van was totaled due to damage to the dash, smashed window and paint. Nothing that would affect the performance or drivability. They put another 60k on it and I haven't had any issues relating to this either. The other damage was done when I owned it to the right quarter panel - I backed into a parked semi-flatbed trailer. This was minor and has also been fixed. There is also some cracks and scuffs in the fiberglass/plastic trim on the lower portion that were there when I bought the van. Overall from 20 feet it looks really good as seen in the photos but it's not perfect. The Glass is in good condition overall except the windshield has a crack in the passenger mirror is cracked.

The interior is also in remarkably good condition for a 24 year old classic. The power windows, central locking, power mirrors, Pioneer AM/FM cassette, clock, wipers, cruise control and heater all work. The AC blows cold. The rear heater is disconnected and has been since I've owned it. There is a stain on the carpet I couldn't quite remove but it is covered by the floor mat. The front door panels are showing their age. The vinyl cover is in really good shape but the MDF panels that the upholstery attaches to needs to be replaced. They're okay as is but would really look better if redone on new backing material.

All in all it's a nice Vanagon that shows it was cared for with low miles on a rebuilt engine. If you have any questions let me know. These are still very much in demand and trying to find a Vanagon in this nice of condition with the low miles on the drivetrain is hard to come by. The camper conversion will also be a nice option for the right person. So please don't low ball me here. I know how much these are worth and if you've been looking around you do too. I'm open to offers but I've owned this for almost 12 years and I'm in no hurry to give it.
