Barn Cats (Oklahoma City)

Please read everything before responding to this ad.

We can assist you if you are looking for barn/outdoor cats in the OKC or Tulsa area. Barn cats can pay for themselves via rodent elimination, grain/feed loss and property damage. All they need in the winter is a box with a hole cut in it filled with straw, food and water. We work with local rescues to find homes for unwanted, stray cats that are generally too "wild" for indoors.

We do not sell cats. We are trying to find homes for "wild", stray and feral cats. "Feral" means that the cat has no owner. With permission from cities, townships and/or counties, sometimes we are hired specifically to trap and remove cats for residential or commercial properties - typically when somebody decided to feed them and years later they figured out that their one stray turned into 41 strays or when somebody who fed the cats passes away or moves. We do not keep cats "on hand" and never know their temperament until they are captured. We work with rescues and the public to find them homes so they do not have to go to the pound. The cats in the ad photo are NOT available.

We must surrender them to the city, a rescue or find them a home on the same day of capture. We also are in contact with feral cat rescues who almost always have cats needing outdoor homes. Rescued cats from rescues sometimes have fees because they have all shots and have been spayed, but many feral cat rescues do not have fees, but donations are greatly appreciated by them.

How much do you charge for these cats?

We do not charge a dime or make any money from the new homes, such as yours, for the feral cats. Your cost comes in to play if they are not fixed and vetted yet. We prefer to deliver the cats directly to your veterinarian vs. your home or barn. If the cats are not "fixed" yet, it is very important to do so. Not doing it will simply create more homeless, wild cats. Low cost clinics are available for this and many coming from rescues are already done. I always suggest having their ear "tipped" so, with a notch on one ear, at a distance, everybody knows it has been vetted and fixed. In this ad's photo, you can see some of our barn cats with tipped ears. You can have cats altered for as little as $30 Simple, fast online searches can help you find a low cost spay clinic.

How wild are these cats?

If you want a cute and cuddly cat of a certain color or species that will get along with your children, other cats or dogs, these cats may not be something you are interested in, but, some of them turn out to be very friendly and loving, especially the younger ones. Feral cats may or may not become more tame. If you must have a cat that will lay in your lap and purr the day you pick it up, this is likely not the right choice for you. Our barn cats were "wild as snot" when we got them, hissing and wanting to draw blood. All but two out of 5 have turned into mouse and rat catching machines that love attention and petting and are totally happy outdoors. Some may become love-muffins in time, and others may stay wild, but we find them very beneficial, entertaining and worth every ounce of money and energy spent on them.

What else is different about adopting a feral cat?

Most cats we work with are wild enough that they will definitely leave if just released at your property. They must be caged for at least 4-6 weeks to get them used to your property smells, animals and to trust you enough to know that you will give them food and water. If they are not kept in an enclosure for that amount of time or if they are treated poorly, they will not stick around your property, they will just leave. Closing the cats in a room in your barn with the door closed is not going to help them get acclimated to you, the smells and other animals. A screen door on the room would as well as a large mesh-covered stall they cannot climb out of.

Do you have an enclosure or outdoor enclosed area large enough to keep the cat(s) in along with food, water, shelter and a litter box?

Without an escape-proof area to get them acclimated to your property, feral cats are NOT an option for you.

If you are in the OKC area and we do not have any cat removal projects going on, we may in the Tulsa area and vise versa. In the OKC area, feral cats in need of homes go to rescues, folks who answer our CL ads and the community cat program of the OK Humane Society. They can be reached at ext 7 and communitycats at okhumane dot org
