Greetings. My name is Charles Harris, and I am seeking a long term position as a mentor/tutor/governor with a family.
My Credentials: Father of 6. Ex police officer. Current substitute Schoolteacher. Ex Little League Baseball coach. Bachelors of Social Work degree, Southern University, New Orleans. 15 hours and practicum short of Bachelors in Child Psych. Early Childhood Education associates degree earned, but not applied for. Have self-practiced civil law on all three levels. Grandfather of one. Trained in three forms of theraputic interventions; Rage Reduction, Confrontational, and Play. I have 42 years of experience in working with children and families. (Starting at age 14 as a camp counselor.)
My Philosophy: Eriksonian. Children should be allowed to be children, naturally developing and mastering each stage of their developmental milestones. But they should have proper ADULT guidance during the course of said development. Providing a stable, consistent environment is critical to their well-being.
My Operating Principle: "Guide, supervise, teach- but make it look as if you're not!"
Operational Ethic: I am willing to work with any children. There are those parents who are concerned that their children are out-of-control; no problem for me. There are those parents who think that their children are "perfect little angels"- no problem for me. Behavior problems are my specialty- but I have no problems whatsoever working with ANY child or children. I expect parents to be very involved in the process, though- GOD gave your children to YOU, and not to me!
Thoughts: Supernanny is wonderful....television. What happens when she's gone? Where's the consistency that children must have, to grow into emotionally stable adults? Personally, she's brilliant- for that 47 minutes she's on film! Think of me as, "super-MANNY" (LOL)- with the benefits of consistency! I am also just "conceited" enough to think that if I had been present, the world would never have heard of the Columbine shooters!
Work Ethic: I am very old-school in my outlook toward the rearing and supervision of children. This is not to say that I am a Luddite, but there's a time and a place for Technology, and there's a time and a place to "get down in the dirt!" Not counting classroom work, I have worked with up to 16 children at a time. Having the benefits of the experiences that I have obtained, in my 56 years, and also being a very well read and literate man, gives me the WISDOM needed to be effective. I may not be, "Smarter than a 5th Grader" (doubtful), but I am surely WISER than one! Also, having been a PARENT, I feel that gives me an edge over a lot of other folks who are only, "in it for the money". I KNOW what's at stake with children!
Other Qualifications: I am also willing to work as your "Personal Assistant". I know how to cook, clean house, and organize. I also have extensive experience in legal research and practice, child development, teaching, published writing- but I am NOT a lawyer. I also am familiar with minor household repairs.
References: I only have one (that I trust to be honest). I will admit that I have not done this sort of work since the late 1970's, and most of the people with whom I worked are either grown or dead. Further, as a Social Worker, I am pretty sure that the Ethics of my profession DO NOT allow me to divulge their past family lives and problems. I welcome any background check that you would wish to perform.
Salary Requirements: I will require room and board, $1000 relocation expenses, and $1500/monthly. I am also asking a $200 interview fee, as I will have to travel. This is not, "engraved in stone", but I do believe that there are few people out here in Modern America who are willing to put in the time and effort that it takes to rear stable and self-confident children- and I expect to be compensated for my experience, knowledge, and wisdom.
Thank you for reading this, and I hope to serve you and your family in the future. Feel free to contact me with any other questions you may have. Email users, Please put, "Captains Courageous", in your subject line; as this is Craigslist, I am sure you know that spammers and scammers abound. I can usually tell, but.....
