I'm writing this post on behalf of my mom. She is an 86 year old retired Rutgers professor. She just sold her house in Highland Park and will be closing on it on 7/15. She loves Highland Park and would love to stay in Highland Park, or at least very close to Highland Park. My sister and I are not in Highland Park and are not in a position to take her in.

Although we are currently looking for an apartment for her, we are also open to other alternatives, such as finding a suitable house share or room share arrangement. My mom is very lively and her health is good, so she doesn't need the type of assistance that would be given at an assisted living facility, but we would prefer that she not live alone, so that is why we are looking for some sort of sharing arrangement. The idea we have in mind is that she could move into an existing household, and that in addition to paying rent, she could pay extra for obtaining assistance with household tasks or other things she needs help with.

Currently she has a young woman who lives with her and provides 10 hours of work per week for her. The woman does shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry and provides occasional rides (my mom is no longer driving) and other miscellaneous household tasks. My mom is in great health except for some arthritis and mild hearing loss. Because of her arthritis she has trouble doing household tasks and that is the primary reason she needs assistance. My mom is seeking a similar arrangement going forward.

Although she is 86 she has an extraordinarily sharp mind, and is lively and fun to be around. She has very progressive views and is politically involved and active and tends to get along with people who are similar. She gets along with people of all ages, from teens to college and grad students to her peers. She is very active socially and regularly attends plays, concerts, lectures and political events with many friends in the area.

A non-smoking household is a must. A household where the occupants are serious minded about work or school and not excessive partiers is a must, of course, as well.
