Beware of K9 Kokua hide this posting unhide

QR Code Link to This Post Kale Lyman, director of K9 Kokua, confessed to me that she had gotten a "coerced relinquish" from my friend by soliciting 2 HPD officers to intimidate my friend as Kale threatened to have her arrested for animal cruelty. She proudly recounted the story of how she had asked HPD to get involved, how HPD had told her there was no evidence of animal abuse, and she had resorted to coercion to steal a dog and her puppies. Coercion is ILLEGAL, but K9 Kokua seems to believe they are above the law.
Kale was extremely proud when she showed me a dog in her custody who's owner continued to call her demanding her dog back. This greatly concerned me, and showed me Kale's true nature. I've noticed that any negative reviews or comments on their Facebook page are deleted IMMEDIATELY. No wonder, if this is how they are treating people they claim to be "helping."

When Kale found out that I was the friend of the woman she had coerced, she started screaming at me incessantly over the phone.

My family first met Alize (the dog that was stolen) and her owner at Makapu'u Beach in October 2014. My family had become homeless due to unforseen circumstances. Alize's owner helped our family survive the hardships of homelessness for the next 5 months. During that time, my family and I were firsthand witnesses to this woman's treatment of her dogs. Never once did we see any behavior or example of animal cruelty or neglect. She consistently treated her dogs as if they were her own children. They were always fed, always maintained a healthy weight, and were always at their owner's side. There were many dogs at Makapu'u Beach that would run the beach or along Kalanianaole Hwy unattended, and some were even hit by cars, but NEVER Alize and her family. We never once saw these dogs unattended in the 5 months we lived in that community.

After securing housing, we continued to visit Makapu'u Beach and check in with our friend. We met Alize's first litter of puppies, we watched the family dynamic and saw their owner handfeed the puppies as she was helping wean them when they got old enough. Again, never once did we witness anything remotely close to negligence, let alone cruelty.

On May 11th, 2017, we visited our friend and were shocked to see that Alize was gone. She told us that Alize and her 2nd litter of puppies had been confiscated under the premise that they were being neglected. Upon investigating this, I discovered that K9 Kokua had indeed confiscated Alize and her puppies sometime late July/early August 2016, at the same time Tropical Storm Darby hit. According to K9 Kokua's own Instagram updates, they had initially been attempting to crowdsource funding for Alize to get spayed and medical treatment for a supposed broken leg. (included in the pictures) Later on, after they had confiscated Alize and the puppies, the story had gotten more involved, with K9 Kokua claiming that Alize had been forced to nurse puppies with a severely broken leg, that she had never had a decent meal and was forced to scrounge for food her whole life, had never known the joys of sleeping in a bed (all of which are complete nonsense, as I had personally witnessed Alize's bedding and dinners multiple times while living at Makapu'u beach). Alize's litter was used to solicit donations by Fur-Angel Foundation and was given the nickname "NFL Terriers."

I called K9 Kokua on May 12th and spoke with director Kale Lyman. She told me a bit of her version of Alize's history, confirming what had been written on Instagram and Facebook, and stating that Alize was hit by a car because she was wandering Kalanianaole Hwy alone, and that her former owner failed to provide food which is probably why Alize was wandering. (Kale seems to have a habit of making up scenarios or changing facts in her mind. For example: during a meeting on May 28th, after she told me Alize had broken her right leg, she told my husband that Alize had broken both back legs. After telling me that Alize had had 2 litters of puppies, she told my husband she had had 3 litters.) Kale also stated, and I quote: "We had to have police officers show up just so we could get a coerced relinquish out of her. This woman did NOT want to give up her dog." In this statement, Kale confirmed what my friend had said happened - that two police officers were present when Kale was threatening to charge her with animal cruelty and to euthenize Alize if she did not sign over her rights to her dogs. Kale admitted to me that she committed coercion in order to obtain the rights to Alize and her puppies.

Upon meeting Alize on May 28th, I was shocked to see how much weight she had gained. She was being fostered by a woman who had let her gain so much weight that it put her into a serious risk category. Kale was at the meeting, and she was noticeably surprised when she saw Alize also. When the foster saw Kale's expression, she said, "I didn't realize how much weight she'd gained." I feel this is evidence of neglect on the part of both the foster and Kale. After adopting Alize, I took her to Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital for a check-up on May 31st, and Dr. Zin asked Alize, "Where did your ribs go?!" At that visit, 2 days after adopting her, Alize weighed 61.8 lbs. According to the Hill's Healthy Weight chart Dr. Zin showed me, Alize's physical description matches the "Serious Risk" category of 45-55% body fat. According to the chart, Alize's ideal weight falls between 35-40 lbs. The foster's negligence caused Alize to gain over 21 lbs beyond a healthy weight. As I stated before, my family lived in the community with Alize for 5 months. Alize never showed signs of difficulty walking or pain. But now, she could barely run, was panting heavily after 10 minutes of walking, and limped after getting up from sleeping for several minutes. It is outrageous that K9 Kokua, claiming that she had broken her right leg, would put her into such a state that not only threatens her life, but also exacerbates a condition like arthritis, especially in the leg that was supposed to have been broken. I am appalled that neither Kale nor her foster can see what they have done to this poor dog.

We returned Alize to her rightful owner in June. But now, K9 Kokua has stolen her AGAIN. This time, it appears to be nothing more than harassment. If you have had a negative experience with K9 Kokua, please share with the community.
