It's strange how most homeowners would not allow an unlicensed electrician to upgrade/change an electrical panel in their home, but a lot of those same people have no problem using an unlicensed Heating and Ac person, even though a heating contractor is working on electrical issues, gas line problems, proper venting and combustion air, proper refrigerant handling, plumbing hookups, and various other trades.
Post from "Wanna be's HVAC Company"
The very definition of a wanna be is someone who is not, and you are NOT a licensed contractor by the state of Tennessee! So by your way of thinking you are the wanna be!
Let me inform people about your first wrong point. A state of Tennessee CMC or CMC-C contractors license is a very intense test that covers a broad range of residential and commercial topics. It is an open book test with 20 to 25 books that is a very hard test.
This broad license covers HVAC, Refrigeration, Gas Piping, Plumbing, Solar HVAC, Process Piping, Sprinklers and Fire Protection, Insulation of HVAC systems, Pollution Control, Pneumatic Tube Systems, Pneumatic temperature control, and boiler construction and repair.
Topics covered on this intense exam include some of the following:
-Electrical knowledge
-Motors and Controls
-Piping (refrigeration, hydronic, steam and process)
-Heating and Cooling principles and theory
-Heating and Cooling equipment and components
-Refrigerants and Refrigeration
-Fuel and LP Gas
-Combustion Air
-Chimneys
-Flues and Vents
-Ducts
-Ventilation and Exhaust
-Plumbing
-Load calculation
-Fire Sprinklers
-Safety
-Fire and Smoke protection
All this is just your first wrong point. Its not just being a good test taker with no real experience. The state requires years of verified experience, references, at least $500,000. liability insurance, workers comp exempt, or workers comp, and on top of all this you have to pass a TENNESSEE BUSINESS AND LAW EXAM!, meet with them in person.
The 2 year renewal is a lot of REQUIRED INFORMATION that includes:
-$200. State of Tennessee Contractors fee for renewal>
-Proof from your insurance agent of at least $500,000 liability insurance.
-Workers comp exempt or workers comp PROOF.
-Company basic financials
-and many more JUST RENEWAL questions and information.

All this is not fun stuff the contractor wants to do, but basic general rules are in place to protect people, and your home. In order to become a contractor you have to meet certain basic safety measures such as having and maintaining liability insurance to protect your home. If your insurance is not current or for some reason canceled the state is notified by the insurance company.

All of this just to explain to people "no real experience, good test takers". Were a small company that is CMC licensed, so the BIG companies are not the only licensed contractors.
Just because a company is licensed does not mean they are:
-Corrupt on service calls and are there just to sell equipment.
-Not capable of all venting and electrical hook ups.
-Use good proper material, in fact the Distributors that sell better equipment tend to stay away from unlicensed people.
-Not willing to get dirty and do a high quality replacement, go the extra mile and make sure the customer is happy.
-Most service techs do not lie, unless your talking about some people on craigslist.
Next time you get a haircut look in front of you on the wall. In order to just do a basic mens cut you have to be licensed by the state! Some of these people don't make a whole lot of money either. Compare that to someone claiming to have your best interest and doing what they are required to do by the state of Tennessee for your families safety and protection.
These are not opinions but facts. IF ITS THAT EASY, JUST TAKE THE TEST, MEET THE REQUIREMENTS LIKE THE REST OF US AND GET YOUR CONTRACTORS LICENSE!
At least when we all go out to peoples houses the playing field will be level. With this new limited license that doesn't appear to require, as of yet, the same amount of time and energy that the licensed companies have had to deal with for years, the unlicensed people might actually pass this one.

Again its up to you who you use but just be informed and educated about who is legally licensed to do work in Tennessee. Do you want to use people that cant spell, articulate a point of view with no real credible explanation of their point? By the way what is air flow design expert? I have worked on variable speed units for decades in homes and commercial, so I guess there it is I said it so Im an expert! The EPA certification, Im not even going to get into this topic again, it is nothing, redneck hillbilly way of tricking people into believing they are legitimate licensed contractors.
