Finding the Right Math Tutor

Let's face it finding a good math tutor for yourself or your child can be daunting. What qualities do you look for in finding the right math tutor? Experience, certification and cost cannot guarantee the tutor will be suitable for your needs. Also, professional tutoring services cannot guarantee success. Many of them charge high costs but pay the tutor very little in return. Another consideration is the tutor doing this because he or she is between jobs or desperate for some modest income?

So, now what? What should you look for in a good math tutor? A sensible thing to do is to call the tutor and speak with him or her. Try to assess their motivation and most importantly, their enthusiasm. See if the tutor is interested in tutoring or if this is just a job to pay the bills. Ask to find out if he or she will work with your child's teacher to determine where your child is having difficulties. Most importantly, ask if you will be charged if the lesson goes over by 15 or 20 minutes. In short, try to determine if the tutor is willing to go the extra mile to help your child succeed.

Also, don't pay over $35.00 per hour for a tutor. This may be a telltale sign that the tutor is tutoring for the money and not really caring about you or your child's success.

What I Can Offer

I am willing to particularize and customize to the level of your needs. Students prefer such individual instruction because it allows them to learn at their own pace without the pressure of peers or authorities. Parents, eager for their children to succeed, realize their children often need more personalized attention than they can get in a classroom.

With over 15 years teaching experience at the college and university levels in areas of mathematics and computer science, I believe to have the necessary skills to provide the quality you expect. Since I am not affiliated with any professional tutoring services, I can be more flexible in scheduling and delivering quality tutoring.

Typical Subjects

Although not an exhaustive list, here are some of the more popular topics I have recently tutored:

Algebra
Calculus
Trigonometry
Technical Math
Basic Arithmetic
C Programming
C++ Programming
HTML and Javascript
Or customize your own tutoring requirements.
Rates

I try to keep my rates as reasonable as possible. Below is a general guideline I use:

$20 per hour - in house
$25 per hour - your place
15 mile radius from Brookline, NH
$35 per hour - your place
16 to 25 mile radius from Brookline, NH
Distances are approximations.
Maybe Tutoring Isn't For You

With over twenty-five years experience as a software engineer, at various levels, I decided to post some programs that you might find useful on my website. These programs cover topics from Biology, Finance, Engineering, Physics and Mathematics. You can find links to these programs on the left side of the website.

Special Thank You

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful positive comments I have received regarding the tutoring I have provided to my many students. Such comments are very much appreciated and inspirational.

Similarly I would like to thank all the constructive criticism I have also received to help me improve my tutoring style or webpage layout. I take such comments quite seriously and found some do have merit. One thing I learned is that no one is perfect.

With beginner level students we start the journey by learning basic concepts and applying them in "real life" situations. Within the first month the student should expect to be able to actually deliver full songs on the instrument. Within the first 3 to 6 months the student should be able to play well over 15 to 20 songs that will build confidence and knowledge while having fun playing to music they know and love.

For the more intermediate to advanced players we build on the foundations they already have in place. Thinking outside the box and using more modern techniques to stay out of a rut and keep growing as a player while also exploring the possibilities of much older technique that may be considered a 'lost art' in today's world.

Also, with students of all levels we can and will explore different pieces to the puzzle like tone, gear, and performance practices. Help with issues such as stage fright or performance anxiety can also be worked on to help students of all levels be able to bring the joy of music to others.

Lessons are a $80 monthly fee. Check out jimmymags.com for more info!!
