What studies are available?
Research studies are designed to improve our overall understanding of a wide range of health-related topics. For example, risk and protective factors for common problems such as obesity, asthma, substance use/addiction, racism, stress, or bullying. There are various types of projects that you can get involved in. Clinical research refers to studies that involve people. A clinical research study may also be referred to as a "research investigation", a "clinical trial", or a "protocol." Treatment studies test how well a particular medication, therapy, or new medical devices treat a specific illness. Assessment studies may involve activities such as completing surveys, questionnaires, providing a small blood sample, or taking pictures of your brain activity. These types of research help us to identify causes or risk factors for particular illnesses, to improve our tools for diagnosing these disorders, and to develop new, more effective treatments.
