We have taken lessons from the BBC and Abbey Road when it comes to capturing audio in the digital format. 100% analog chain until the A/D converters with many great mics and pre's to choose from.
I know Portland is no mecca for successful studios, and there is no stable pricing structure to go by, so every studio charges what they think their skill level is worth as a value to their client.

I must admit that after 5 years of recording in this region, how difficult it is to make a reasonable income to grow. I am not in a competitive race with the other studios even though I believe the main reason for most of their success is based on their accessibility from the the central city. I can see location makes a big impact on client decision to record somewhere. I am located outside the city in Beautiful Lake Oswego. My studio is not sound proof and really, it doesn't need to be. I consider this place to be a retreat style location and very conducive to creativity. I also don't believe that a control room that looks like it is a modified Star Ship Enterprise makes a lick of difference when it comes to the capture of audio, even though it might impress a cabinet maker and some impressionable musician who thinks visuals equate to a great session....or at least representation of high quality...Maybe, maybe not!

This studio has recently added a room that is built to be removed when not required. This room mimics a dead room. Although not dead, microphones can't tell the difference. It allows me to capture great close miking technique and still get the live room digital ceiling mics and mid-side where the mid is a digital and in the dead space and the side is opened to the walls 18' respective to the room walls in a 36'w x 16'd x 24'h. This means that the room contains frequencies below 60Hz. To counteract the standing waves we simply put a gobo behind the room ambient mics..Problem solved. They sound amazing and HUGE!!
