Has there been a surefire way to escape the rat race all this time (New Castle County)

So, I'm looking to explore the idea of mimicking the very successful entrepreneurs of the group that calls themselves Ganas in Staten Island in NYC who figured out how to lower their expenses and basically become self employed thus escaping the rat race. You can find a little more about them on their website at www.ganas.org.

Basically what they did was buy a house in a lower cost neighborhood 30 years ago and some of them moved into that house and they did what they had to do by sharing rooms and living below their means. Then, since they had a low mortgage spread out amongst around 7 people and they were also saving by buying food in bulk and other things, they were able to save up over a few months and have enough of a down payment to buy another house on the same street only a few doors down, then more people moved in to that house and they found that they were saving even more money together that they had enough to offer the owner of the houses in-between them a good rate for their houses. This meant that they now owned several houses in a row and they proceeded to find ways to make the houses more situated for their needs by knocking down some walls, getting rid of wasted space like extra kitchens, etc.

At the same time, they started using their extra funds and setup a couple of businesses in the area that are successful and some of them work at them. So, today they are doing really good proving that living and working with an extended family (or perhaps tribe would be a better word) can not only be done, but it's smarter and better for all involved. So, I'd like to mimic this by starting out in Wilmington or somewhere cheapish in this area and am looking for others that want to explore this idea, obviously we all need to have an affinity for one another and it'll take some time to feel it all out before any ground needs to be broken and we can visit ganas or other places like them to get better ideas of how to go around it and how to avoid common pitfalls, but I think it's worth a shot, as it doesn't seem like there's a better way to escape the rat race unless you've got extreme talent in certain.
