Recently diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective (Boston, MA)

The BICEPS Study is looking for participants for a research study at BIDMC in Boston and McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Cognitive Enhancement Therapy (CET) on brain function and structure compared to Enriched Supportive Therapy (EST) in people recently diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.

Eligible patients will be:
-18-45
-Recently diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (in the last 8 years)
-Currently taking prescribed anti-psychotic medication
-Ability to read (6th grade level or higher) and speak fluent English
-Not diagnosed with mental retardation, history of head trauma or seizures
-Not abusing alcohol or drugs within past 3 months

Procedures include:
-Screening & assessments (clinical interviews, cognitive testing, MRI) at baseline, 9 month, 18 month and 30 months
-Random assignment to 1 of 2 therapy treatments that will require 1- 2 office visits/week for up to 18 months

Study procedures can take place in Boston or Belmont, MA. Eligible participants with be compensated $1,175 for completing all study related tasks.
