Maryland's Minority Business Enterprise Program was enacted to encourage minority-owned firms to participate in the State procurement process. To be eligible for certification as an MBE a business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. Currently the following groups can qualify as MBEs:
African American
Hispanic American
Asian American
Native American
Women
Disabled persons
Becoming certified as an MBE exposes you to work opportunities on State and local government projects. Maryland law currently requires State agencies to make every effort to have 25% of their procurement contracts go directly or indirectly to certified MBE firms
