When I started advertising here on Craiglist several years ago, there weren't many other engineer / producers doing so. Now on any given day there are several people offering the same services that I offer. Many of these folks offer their services at what seem to be "too good to be true" rates. I would like to give every perspective recording artist some advice; ask for samples of their work before you hire them. Listen to their most recent project to see what their recordings sound like. Ask them what kind of training / education they have had. Have they assisted for any successful engineers early in their careers to learn their craft?

The truth is, just because someone has some gear in a room, doesn't mean they have the experience or expertise, or ears to realize your artistic vision. It takes many years of working with other people, and listening & watching what they do to help develop the skills needed to be able to know what mic to use on a certain instrument, or how to fix a problem. Experience is what is going to make something great come out of the speakers! I've had countless clients over the years come to me disappointed with their last recording endeavor. They, not knowing any better, went with someone who had cheap rates, but lacked that essential experience. It is my goal, or mission statement if you will, to have every client walk away from a project with me & say "that was the best recording experience I've had", and more importantly, I want them to feel that way a month later when they listen to their recording again.
