Daito serves authentic Japanese foods ("Washoku"). So I had a hard time figuring out what to order. I could've ordered a bit more but I didn't have much. So I ordered the Tempura Udon with Kayaku-rice. I know it wasn't a cold day but the Udon tasted really good. The tempura included shrimp, snap peas, burdock, carrot, eggplant and sweet potato. Kayaku-rice was good with sliced carrots and ginger. I was surprised when the Udon came out because it was a huge bowl. I felt awkward using the huge wooden spoon for the soup.

The waiter was very attentive. Yes they are strict with their parking since there are only 10 spots in their lot. The waiter asked if I drive this one car and I told him what car I drove.

The inside is nice where you can either go on a date or just have a nice dinner with a friend. The blinds are drawn so you feel like you are in a cavern of sorts.

I don't actually know how to eat udon.

Given a large wooden spoon (it looked like a ladle), a bowl of curry udon, and a tinier bowl next to it, the most obvious thing I thought there was to do was ladle the soup into my tiny bowl. For some reason, I thought the point was for us to drink the soup from the bowl. Later, I told my friend about my experience, and she laughed and told me the ladle was my spoon.

So, there's that. I guess I'm culturally out of the loop although how someone is supposed to eat with such an awkward ladle in their hand is beyond me.

I came here on a weekday right when it re-opened for dinner, so it wasn't crowded at all. The service was very friendly, and even the manager came to check up on us a couple of times to see how we were doing.

Both me and my friend ordered a curry udon. Honestly, we were a little skeptical--curry AND udon? Curry was already heavy as it is, so we didn't really understand how to eat that with noodles. But it was SO good--just the perfect amount of flavor and salt and meat. After I finished my noodles, I just wanted to sit there and slurp on my broth.

Seriously though, if you've never had curry udon, you need to stop by Daito! If you're heading down north of The Drag for your typical Halal Bros or Torchy's, you should definitely take a detour one of those days and try Daito.

Austin is in need of authentic Japanese restaurants. Maybe I just feel this way because the staff is Japanese and the decor is amazing, but Daito seems pretty authentic to me! I've tried two types of udons and a beef roll appetizer that I don't remember the name of (But check out attached picture!).

Kitsune Udon: Super classic and a safe choice for anyone's first time eating Japanese udon. Kitsune udon generally tastes the same anywhere I eat it, so this is no exception. Light, slightly sweet broth with tofu and chewy udon.

Curry Udon: I think this is what Daito is famous for, because it's something I've never seen anywhere else. Don't be scared off by the broth; it's actually much, much lighter than you'd expected. And super tasty! Definitely try this if it's first time at Daito.

Beef roll appetizer: The picture on the menu made this dish look much bigger than it is. So I was a little deflated by I realized each roll was only about the thickness of my finger. Regardless, this appetizer is really good! The taste is a little surprising because there's a lot of different flavors going on (I still don't know what some of the stuff in and on the roll are...). It tastes a little herbal, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Daito's biggest flaw is that it's a little pricey. The appetizer mentioned earlier was around $8. The udon was less filling for the $10 that it costs.

Cold outside ... pop in for a hot bowl of udon - Osaka style. We were there for lunch and service was attentive. I recommend getting there right as they open if going on a Friday. The restaurant is quiet and small. Just great to get away from the West campus bustle.
