I am sharing this warning due to a personal experience with domestic violence as well as RECENT harassment/stalking issues with someone I was renting from that I met on here due to their advertisement.
My warning is to do a THOROUGH BACKGROUND CHECK if you are renting from an individual that is offering cheap rent out of their home. I am not the only individual to have been the victim of a domestic violence OR a stalking/harassment incident with this person and I would like to do everything within my rights as a victim to prevent it from happening again. I am by no means telling anyone who to rent from or who not to rent from. My sole concern lies in the safety of future female renters in Cody (as this individual targets females).
Please be SAFE and SMART and use available resources to ensure you know if the person you are considering renting from has a violent history. There are multiple websites online that allow for inexpensive personal background checks. Some will provide free information. As scary as this sounds, despite being arrested multiple times and spending a decent amount of time in jail (in more than one state) for Domestic Violence/Grand Larceny, this person I rented from has NO online record that is visible via background check (at least that I have found). I have yet to figure out how that is possible and this information was hidden from me the entire time I was a tenant up until now; I did manage to dig up arrest records, jail time, and charges very recently and was completely shocked. While it cannot hurt to do a background check, it's truly terrifying to find out that it doesn't always help, which is why I am posting this.
In the town of Cody there is the resource of Crisis Intervention for anyone who feels they are not in a safe situation. Crisis Intervention is a very confidential service and will not release the name or details of any victims who choose to use them. In my recent case they have been extremely helpful and helped me with every step necessary to ensure my protection and safety. They also have records of offenders that have been complained about. In my case, this offender had an ongoing file full of complaints from past situations of abuse and harassment (mine just added to it).
For my own safety I cannot provide more information than this but I can tell you that there is not anything that can be legally done to prevent the individual in my case from seeking future female tenants, hence this warning to females in Cody. My goal is not to condone gossiping or spread false rumors, but to save another woman or young girl from going through not just what I have, but multiple women prior to me have. Keep in mind Domestic Violence often turns into Stalking and Harassment. While I cannot give details there is a REASON I am mentioning this.
